This burial shroud was coloured using black walnut — one of the most traditional plant dyes, long valued for producing rich, earthy tones that are both beautiful and enduring.
The fabric was slowly immersed in a natural dye bath made from black walnut and then gently treated with gallnut tannin, allowing the colour to settle deeply into the fibres.
The result is a warm, grounded tone reminiscent of soil, bark, and forest floor — colours that feel steady, natural, and quietly protective.
Each piece is prepared and dyed by hand, and no two will ever be exactly the same.

The Botanical Dyeing Process
The fabric was immersed in a dye bath made from black walnut hulls and then treated with natural tannins to help the fibres receive and hold the colour.
